				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Most of you know that I have been looking forward to the next few weeks as a combined time of family vacation plus a time of sequestered solitude at the end of my break. The last 11 months have been exhausting but incredibly profitable for the ministry entrusted to me. Many thanks to my wife and children who have given up time with me in order to complete some large ministry projects at Meadow. I also wish to extend my gratitude to the staff, co-leaders and people of Meadow Baptist Church for giving your best during this crunch time for our work together. We have seen God establish some historical moments and changes in how we will engage in Kingdom work from this point forward. I commend you in a job well done and trust we will see much fruit from our intentional labors for His name.</p>
<p>During my time away, please pray for me to reconnect with my family, find physical and mental rest after many months with little to no stoppage and renewed spiritual vigor which I will be seeking in my time of fasting in prayer from June 30-July 4. My hope is that God will meet with us in some undeniable ways in the next twelve months.</p>
<p>I likely will not be posting anything in the blog until after my return the week after July 4th. I am scheduled to be back in Meadow&#8217;s pulpit on Sunday morning July 7 and plan to begin a new morning series then. While away, I will likely be posting some nuggets here and there on Twitter and Facebook at the links below. 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So grateful to have a Father who taught me Jesus as a boy. Dad was there for me when, after running far away from the principles he taught me, grace brought me to my knees and into the Kingdom &#8211; he did not walk away from me in those wandering years but he refused to coddle me while I chose to remain there. I thought of him every day while I lived in darkness and was so happy that he was there to receive me when my dawning occurred. He is not only my dad, but my brother in Christ and my friend.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m thankful today for all dads who resist our culture&#8217;s trends wherein there are plenty of men with physical offspring but not enough dads with their kids in the deepest relational impact. Even more stirring to my heart are Kingdom men who live for something that outlasts them. The children of Kingdom men are reminded through watching their dads that something better exists now than money, good looks, power and material possessions. These children are also understanding that something beyond &#8220;all of this&#8221; is awaiting them and they are being prepared for what waits beyond the doorway of death. The children of Kingdom men are seeing glimpses of that King in the man they call Father. I am so blessed to be the happy father of Alicia and Landon &#8211; my two arrows from the Lord. I call them <span class="bold-orange">Wonder (Alicia) &amp; Thunder (Landon)</span>. These two children bring me such rich joy and I could no longer imagine life without them by my side. One day they will venture off into the fullness of what God has planned for them but today they still belong to their mother and me. Precious, precious arrows from the Lord. God, help me to aim them well.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The location of your faith is crucial. For some, faith is little more than the desire to keep a positive attitude, the power of optimism, a sense that everything is going to be okay. This is basically having faith<em> in faith</em>. Then there are those who trust <em>in God’s work</em> among them. They believe strongly in what God does and acknowledge their confidence that He is working all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called unto saving faith in Christ. This second type of faith is better than the first type but it is still not sufficient. We are not <em>merely</em> to think positively or to <em>merely</em> trust that God will do us good. Positive thinking can be severely hampered by its dependence on our present circumstances always being in line with our life plans or presumed pathway. Most often with this type of faith, if things are going swimmingly then we are confident and happy – this often masquerades as faith. When it comes to merely trusting that God loves us and works for our good we are left slightly vulnerable in that our definition of what is “good” is limited to what we are experiencing in the present and usually has our comfort, ease and pleasure as its core. God can actually be working eventual good through the immediacy of something bad, painful or difficult so this type of faith is not always accurate.</p>
<p>You see, the location of our faith is crucial to our ability to persevere. We cannot merely anchor our faith in what God is doing because, frankly, many times we do not understand what He is doing and we rarely see the totality of what He is working in the present moment. <span class="bold-orange">So where then should we tether or faith? </span> Not in what is happening to us in life. Nor in what we are trusting God to do on our behalf. Our faith must be anchored in something that never changes: We must trust in the character of God. Not so much our interpretation of what we see Him doing or want Him to do…but in who He says that He is. This is where we must locate our faith.</p>
<blockquote><p>“Though He slay me, <span style="text-decoration: underline;">yet will I trust in Him</span>: but I will maintain my own ways before Him.” &#8211; Job 13:15</p>

<p>“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, <span style="text-decoration: underline;">yet I will rejoice in the Lord</span>; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.” &#8211; Habakkuk 3:17-18</p>

<p>“<span style="text-decoration: underline;">Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us</span> from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">But if not</span>, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” &#8211; Daniel 3:17-18</p></blockquote>
<p>The suffering saint of ancient days, Job, declared above that He was committing to trust God even as Job believed he was suffering unjustly and dying. Habakkuk proclaimed that he would remain joyful in God’s saving grace even if Habakkuk were to lose all his material goods and have no prospect of regaining them in the future (an empty harvest a she described not only kills today but also signals doom for tomorrow). In Daniel’s prophecy above we read the unified words of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego who humbly said that they did not know whether or not God would save them from the burning furnace, but they declared that they would remain faithful to Him no matter the outcome of their situation. We should pause and consider how what they decided compares to what they were experiencing.</p>
<p>Job, Habakkuk and the 3 Hebrew men were in clear jeopardy of losing it all. Physical health, material security and the potential of living another day were no longer guaranteed to them. They had no idea what God would do. They chose to remain joyfully &amp; trustingly submitted to Him as they waited to see what would happen next. This is the revealing of what biblical faith must become in our own lives. We must believe that what we perceive God is doing can be wrong&#8230; but what God says of Himself never is. So we learn to look at all that is happening around us through the filter of who God has promised that He is and ever will be to us. We do not interpret God through our current or future circumstances but, by faith, we must learn to interpret our circumstances through His unchanging character and word. When God&#8217;s character and our experience do not seem to properly align, by faith we retain our confidence in who He is and wait on clarity concerning what we are experiencing. If we begin to view His unchanging character through the lens of what we perceive He might be doing in our difficulty, our faith begins to weaken, our trust in Him threatens to become suspicion of Him and our blessing can become our bitterness.</p>
<p>Faith sometimes must cry out, <span class="bold-orange">“I do not know what You are doing, God. But I know who You are.”</span></p>
<p>There is no other place for our trust to safely rest.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Praying to, waiting for and trusting in God always carries with it a felt element of risk. When we do these things consistently we are surrendering our sense of control. We move out of the captain&#8217;s seat. We humble ourselves in recognition of our limitations and invite God to come and superintend over us and the thing for which we are asking. There are times when we do so with a sense of relief and confidence, grateful to turn troubling matters over to Him. Other times we reluctantly release our presumed grip on a situation and lay it before God with a sense of dread, an uncomfortable foreboding and a <em>less-than-enthusiastic</em> concern over how things will work themselves out. When God is quiet and still as we grow in desperate need to hear Him and see Him move&#8230;our confidence sometimes wobbles. We want to control the outcome but we know we cannot control God. He leaves us powerless and our faith tells us that this is necessary but now we find ourselves having to work through that thorny patch of distrust. <span class="bold-orange">Yes, I said it:</span> we sometimes fail to retain our belief that God is supremely good and we can grow defeated in our suspicion of what He is going to do with our prayers.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: 1em; letter-spacing: 0.03px; line-height: 1.4;">&#8220;Hear my prayer, O Lord; </span>let my cry come to You! Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my distress! Incline Your ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call!&#8221; &#8211; Psalm 102:1-2 {ESV}</p>

<p><span style="font-size: 1em; letter-spacing: 0.03px; line-height: 1.4;">&#8220;Though I call and cry for help, H</span>e shuts out my prayer.&#8221; &#8211; Lamentations 3:8 {ESV}</p></blockquote>
<p>The reason why I listed the verses above is simple and helpful. We see, right there in our bibles, are preserved words of doubt, struggle and skepticism from other children of God. He did not edit them out of His Word but actually deposited them within that sacred book. He ensures that we have opportunity to know that our struggle is not unique and not necessarily an indicator that we are some form of spiritual lameness. Habakkuk, God&#8217;s prophet, wonders aloud why the Lord doesn&#8217;t do something to remedy injustice. The Psalmist, perhaps it is King David, demands of the Lord to show His face and not to pull away in the hour of his need. In Lamentations, Jeremiah is much bolder and speaks words that you and I are too pious to proclaim when he says that God is shot-blocking his prayers back down to the earth. If two prophets and a king who were intimately acquainted with God could reach places of stark doubt and dread in their hearts, should we be surprised when we find ourselves also there?</p>
<p><span class="bold-orange">So what do we do with unanswered prayers?</span> There are several choices of how to respond when God seems to be denying you what you are asking of Him. First of all, you can stop praying if you choose. That will protect you from the disappointment of asking further and hazarding a non-affirming response from your Maker. It will insulate you from what do with the messy reality that comes about if you do not receive what you were asking. Secondly, you could change your heartfelt petitions until they no longer communicate what your heart desires; this happens when we continue to offer prayers but they become blunted and non-specific as we move from our original burdened desire into some soupy, religiously murky form of petition. This type of prayer is little more than a spiritual shrug and giving in to the <em>whatever will be, will be</em> mantra. I have been one who has responded in both of these ways when it seems to me that God is not listening. In more recent days I have been brought to the place where I just keep praying. I remain steadfast in the activity of prayer and welcome God to free me from from all the barbs of my doubts and fears, even as I offer the very words which frame the prayers. I work through my struggles as if they were outside of me trying to get in instead of within me trying to dictate what happens on the outside. God has released me to speak frankly with Him and not to feign some dignified approach to Him as I suppress the groaning of my heart. There are days when I am blunt and real, as were the saints in our bibles, and I refuse to be polite and quaint as if I were writing some fairytale. I am often reminded that He is my Father and not some stuffy diplomat who has no time to trifle with the likes of me. Then&#8230;I must come to the place wherein I recognize that, though my prayers do not change Him, they do<em> immensely help me</em>. Through prayer, I am made to come to the end of myself repeatedly and find Him unchanging and unchangeable. He welcomes me to (even wants me to?) retain my steadfastness in praying. He, according to <a href="http://www.esvbible.org/James+1%3A5/" target="_blank">James 1:5</a>, will give me wisdom whenever I am ignorant and will not reproach nor upbraid me for coming to Him with faith that is not stellar nor exemplary. The worst thing I could do with unanswered prayers is too walk away in doubt. One of the best things I can do is to pray through my fears. Go ahead and doubt for a while, but do not walk away with them. Let God bring definition to your dilemma as you rehearse your doubts before Him with raw honesty. In time, those very doubts will give way to clarity and you will be very glad you asked the Almighty the tough questions.</p>
<p>He has heard them all before and never once shooed the <em>asker</em> away. May He hear your voice again today whether it is trumpeting or trembling&#8230;keep asking. This is what we must do with unanswered prayers.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>None of us has reached the pinnacle of our salvation. We can simplify salvation in this manner: Justification (past activity of God on our behalf) &gt; Sanctification (present activity of God on our behalf) &gt; Glorification (full act of God on our behalf). Because we are living in the process of sanctification we should be well aware that we are not yet fully what we could be or should be. <em>We still sin. We wrestle with the world and the flesh. We fail to properly resist the devil and, therefore suffer consequences in unnecessary defeats.</em> No, we are not yet glorified but…we have certainly been justified. It is because of our justification that we are no longer what we once were, nor are we what others who have not been justified currently are. We are most definitely new creations, though clearly imperfect for the time being. In spite of the reality of our current imperfections, the letter from the Apostle James <a href="http://www.esvbible.org/James+2%3A14-26/" target="_blank">(see chapter 2:14-26)</a> reminds us that <span class="bold-orange">a valid inward-faith undeniably flows with outward actions</span>. It is not that we are saved by our good works but, rather, that our good works evidence our true salvation.</p>
<p>So today I think it would serve us well to create two lists that will enable us to 1) be encouraged by God’s gracious transforming of our lives and 2) to be humbled that there are acknowledged areas of further change needed within us.</p>
<p><span class="bold-orange"><b>List #1 – Celebration:</b></span> Take some time to write down areas wherein you clearly see the evidence of your faith resulting in good works. It may be that you have been made generous. It might be an inner thirst for prayer or a love for the Word. Perhaps you have experienced the eagerness to forgive others or that you have been graced to serve anonymously behind the scenes with no desire for credit. You may never want to preach or sing but you have a zeal for sending a card, making a phone call or offering a meal to those in need. Don&#8217;t minimize the reality that you have been made to endure through heavy trials and testings &#8211; that is solid evidence of a life which is being transformed. What evidence is there in your life that God has made you new? What can you celebrate as His gracious work in and through you? Be thorough and patient and welcome God to show you how He has changed you since you received Jesus Christ by faith. Celebrate the good works that He has given as evidence of His saving you. Be grateful, humbled and powerfully blessed that the Potter&#8217;s hands are actively working your clay.</p>
<p><span class="bold-orange"><b>List #2 – Hope:</b></span> Not as enjoyable to create as the first, this list should focus on areas where your faith should be revealed more clearly. Don’t avoid the conviction here but rather embrace it as God’s nudging that herein is opportunity to bring Him further glory. Are their places in your life which are not yet aligned with the character and counsel of God? Let me answer that for you: YES. Become honest and proactive about these places in your life. This list might include your need to invest more energy in personal service to others. You may discover a reluctance to exhibit faith in your financial giving, relying on the presumed security of <em>keeping</em> instead of the joy of <em>releasing</em>. Perhaps you struggle with fear of embarking on new opportunities which will test your trust in God. Are you nursing a grudge against someone else? Jesus spoke of the reality of your light being potentially hidden under a basket of some sort; you have not allowed that to occur have you? Many are afraid to give verbal witness for Jesus as they wrestle with the notion that they are ashamed on some level of being a follower of Christ. Every Christian has space to grow and this will be reality for us as long as we are in this body and on this planet. You are being sanctified &#8211; a very encouraging reality. Yet this same truth of our sanctification requires our participation, submission and humility if we are ever to become who God intends us to be. Linger over these needs in your life for a moment and welcome God to speak to you about areas that are not revealing your trust in Him through resulting good works. Petition Him in hope as you welcome Him to bring good works from dammed up portions of your life-stream.</p>
<p>In the end it is important to realize that you cannot simply will yourself into spiritual fitness. This is an ongoing work of grace. Yet do not be confused and believe in error that, because it is grace, it is independent of you. The process yields an ever greater treasure than your practical spiritual growth: you grow in intimacy with the invisible God who works on your behalf. You get to know Him in ways that you would not have if he left you the way you were. Respond to His sanctifying work in your life. Be there as it happens.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Waking up across the pond on Sunday in Cheltenham England is my dear friend, David Price, who serves the people of Cheltenham EV Free Church. He may be a little startled if he checks this blog today because I&#8217;m posting a great article by David below&#8230;without his permission. You see, when I saw it on his church website on Saturday it was already close to 11 PM in England so I did not want to disturb his sleep with a <em>ding</em> of a text message asking permission to post his words on the TT Sunday blog. So I&#8217;m engaging in sanctified presumption and I&#8217;m really hoping it will capture our thoughts before gathering at our churches on Sunday morning. No permission has been granted me to repost this but, sometimes, forgiveness is easier than permission.<em> Thank you, DP!</em></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Mathematics For The Weekend</span></h3>
<p>If we were to try and describe the Christian life in terms of formula, we might smile at snapshots such as <strong>“Suit + scowl = super spiritual”, or “More noise + more repetitions = more entertainment”</strong>. We might also be able to appreciate <strong>“Humbled heart + holy awe = heavenly usefulness” or “No love + no light = no life”</strong>; and our own experience will tell us that <strong>“Pathetic relationship + perfunctory worship = passive witness”</strong> while on the other hand <strong>“Satisfying walk + stimulating worship = successful witness”</strong>.</p>
<p>But as we prepare for Sunday, let me share two more “mathematical” equations with you :</p>
<p><span class="bold-orange">Ill-considered preparation + inadequate worship = imperceptible profit</span></p>
<p><span class="bold-orange">Cold hearts + empty words = pointless meeting</span></p>
<p>I know that the adversary of souls loves to keep us busy at home on Saturday when we have been busy at work all week. I know he has many ways of giving us an excuse for not getting to church (illness, weather, emergencies of various kinds, family problems). He also seeks to prevent our getting to church in a right frame of mind with other distractions, so we get there angry or worried or resentful or preoccupied. Either way, we are hindered in our preparation for worshiping our King &amp; Saviour.</p>
<p><em>“What?” </em>you say …<em> “Prepare? … But I’m only going to church?”</em> For many friends, sadly, the very idea of heart-preparation is a foreign concept. Many people will turn up expecting to see well-oiled presentations from “them-up-front”; they go to be entertained and then go home (or go out), and there is no participation. Many have a “just-in-time” arrival, and a “just-about-awake” awareness of what’s going on, and a “just-let-me-out-it’s-meal-time/game-time” attitude when their clock says it’s time to go. Can such attitudes really expect a blessing from the Lord Almighty? Have they given Him the adoration and thanks that should be WHY they are there? Is He “fooled” by empty words? Or is “church” just a respectable social club, where just attending is enough to quieten the conscience – if indeed the church-attendance habit even merits any thought at all.</p>
<p>The sad fact is that many who attend church have an inadequate view of God, so they offer an inadequate travesty of worship, based on an inadequate view of the gospel because they have an inadequate view of their sinfulness. The result of “just going to church” is not growth in grace but a gradual hardening of the heart as they become increasingly blind and increasingly deaf to the wonder of redemption and salvation.</p>
<p>What if we could break the habit of “being happy in our social club” and instead become prostrate before the throne of the living God, “lost in wonder, love and praise”? What if we could make time on Saturday to pause and wonder at the amazing grace and mercy of God in saving anybody, let alone you and I? What if we could stop and think about God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit – Who they are, and what we are in comparison? What if we took time before going to church to reflect on the goodness of God in providing our daily needs, and the love of the Saviour in loving us and giving Himself for us, and the wonderful work of the Holy Spirit in giving us another opportunity to meet with the family of God, as well as giving us the Bible that tells us so much about God’s dealings with his people down the years and into eternity?</p>
<p>What if we could think about the services, and who will be leading, and who will be sitting next to us and around us, and pray for them? What if we could seek to prepare ourselves so we can go with “clean hands and a pure heart” to worship the thrice-Holy God? What if we could go with hungry hearts to hear the message the preacher has been given by the King to bring to us? Can you imagine the impact if EVERYONE who attends a God-honouring, Christ-exalting, Spirit-filled worship service was blessed in the depth of their souls this Sunday because the preached word of God fell not on the path, or on stony ground, or weed-choked ground, but on good prepared soil?</p>
<p>I’ll close with one more:</p>
<p><span class="bold-orange">Prepared to meet the King + prepared to hear His word = prepared to face the world</span></p>

		<title>No Grandchildren</title>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There was a day in Israel’s history when a second-grader was made their king. No, seriously&#8230;a second-grade boy wore a crown and inherited a throne. I have two children, both of whom have successfully triumphed over the second grade. Brilliant as they both are, neither of them needs to be on a throne ruling a nation. Yet in God’s providence, this is exactly what happened to a seven year old named Joash a little less than 3,000 years ago. Interestingly, God also provided the means by which this young boy would reign <em>successfully</em> for quite some time as Israel’s king. <span class="bold-orange"> What did God do in order this success of Joash to be possible? </span> He placed a godly person in the young man’s life that exerted real spiritual influence over him. Notice what the Scripture says of this time in the life of Joash:</p>
<blockquote><p>“And Joash did what was right in the sight of the Lord <span style="text-decoration: underline;">all his days wherein </span><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Jehoiada the priest instructed him</span>.” &#8211; 2 Kings 12:2</p></blockquote>
<p>Joash acted wisely and lived rightly because of someone in his life, Jehoiada the priest, being actively involved in his spiritual formation. How blessed we are of the Lord to have these types of godly influences to shape us. Their very presence helps us discern right and wrong, truth and falsehood, light and darkness. When we are near them we slow down and think of the words they have shared, the example they have lived out before us and the expectation they have for us. Though we certainly desire to honor God with our lives sometimes, when our flesh is tempted to waver, having a righteous person nearby helps us to think twice before we make foolish decisions. God uses the presence of spiritual people to temper us because we see them, know them and can feel their presence when we are choosing life&#8217;s paths and making our decisions. For some of us this person is a parent. Others of you are married to spouses who hunger for the Lord and inspire you to do the same. Spiritual leaders can often serve as those who help us recognize boundaries and open doors of opportunity. It would be marvelous if we always were motivated by a deep commitment to Christ but, frankly, sometimes we are helped along the way by having a visible person walking next to us and offering wise counsel. The influence of a committed Christian in our lives cannot be taken for granted. While they are with us, we are often made to feel nearer to our God and prevented from going astray</p>
<p><em>Then one day they are gone. </em> Parents go home to heaven. Spiritual leaders are reassigned by God to different locales. Spouses leave earth ahead of us to meet the Lord. When this occurs, a dangerous moment for us arises. It is the moment when we get to learn if <em>our own faith</em> is real or if we may have been unknowingly riding upon the coat-tails of somebody else&#8217;s faith. Unfortunately, Joash found quickly that Jehoiada served him more as a buffer from doing wrong. Joash was obedient when human eyes were upon him but when those eyes closed in death, the idea of honoring his God was <em>unreal</em> to him. He did not live for the Lord; Joash lived for Jehoiada so his true nature was seen when godly Jehoiada was moved off the scene. Read below.</p>
<p><span class="bold-orange">“Now <span style="text-decoration: underline;">after the death of Jehoiada</span> the princes of Judah came and paid homage to the king. Then<span style="text-decoration: underline;"> the king listened to them. And they abandoned the house of the Lord, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols&#8230;</span>” &#8211; 2 Chronicles 24:17-18 {ESV}</span></p>
<p>Here are two things for us to learn today:</p>
<p>1) We desperately need people who influence us for Christ. We need their examples. God sometimes blesses us for their sake, even when we may not be properly positioned for a blessing of our own <a href="http://www.esvbible.org/1+Corinthians+7%3A13-14/" target="_blank">(1 Cor. 7:13-14)</a>. It is not far-fetched to say that many are being blessed in life because they are connected closely to another whom God has graciously favored. How good of the Lord to surround us with people like this and to give us the powerful potential from observing their faith, hungering for its genuineness in our own hearts and being found by the gracious God who is so real to them.</p>
<p>2) You will know if your faith is genuine when those upon whom you leaned for spiritual strength are removed from you. Frightening as it may be, you may not be able to know this <em>unless</em> those precious people are taken away. If you continue after God in their absence through your faithful love, devotion and worship then that person was a powerful and effective utensil of the Almighty in your life. If, when they are gone, you lose your commitments, reverse course and leave off from active faith and spiritual obedience &#8211; or if you simply stand still in your carrying of the cross…then it is likely that you were riding piggy-back on <em>their faith</em> all along and should be concerned about what you have called your own. Real faith endures because its origin is in Christ who has not left you even when that precious person has. This is a suffocating potential but one you should come to terms with. <span class="bold-orange">Is your faith your own or was it simply that a godly person that was once in your life served as a regulator of your behavior?</span> You need to go there and find the answer because it is a matter of eternity and there are no second chances for you to get this issue settled.</p>
<p>Gratefully love on those who are helping you. Honor them by asking God to make your faith as real as their own. Beware of living vicariously through them because they cannot save you, no matter how godly their character or powerful their influence or how closely associated you are (or were) with them. There is only one Savior and Lord. There is only one God and He has many children.</p>
<p>But He has no grandchildren and never will.</p>

		<title>Looking Forward To The Afterward</title>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: 1em; letter-spacing: 0.03px; line-height: 1.4;">We have all heard this quaint saying which is actually rooted in solid truth: <span class="bold-orange"> God loves you and has a great plan for your life.</span> While this is a true statement, it is not sufficient in the way it is communicated, specifically because we have been trained to associate love with<em> pleasure and ease.</em> Also, when we hear the words &#8220;great plan for your life&#8221; we again find our minds being ushered toward a concept of that which is <em>comfortable and convenient</em>. If you are truly seeking to follow God and have committed to live for His glory then you well know that there is no guarantee in this life for constant pleasure, ease, comfort and convenience. The beautiful and fragrant rose that God extends to us is connected to a stem with thorns.</span></p>
<blockquote><p>“You guide me with Your counsel, <span style="text-decoration: underline;">and afterward</span> You will receive me to glory.” &#8211; Psalm 73:24 {ESV}</p></blockquote>
<p>The full grasp of God’s perfect love for us will not be gained in this life. The ecstasy of His prepared peace, joy and glory for you and me cannot be perfectly experienced while we live here. The tension we all feel within ourselves is a hard to define sense of longing for the<em> shall-be</em> while living in the <em>not-yet</em>. We were spiritually reborn through faith in Jesus Christ with an insatiable appetite for Heaven but we are living out our days in a realm that is far from the beauty of God’s glory. So we hunger again today for<em> the afterward</em>.</p>
<p>We want perfect health but we get sick and die. We want happiness but we experience heartbreak. We crave loyalty but encounter mistreatment. We look for hope but taste fear. How we seek for guarantees!… but we are forced to live by faith which feels to us as less than guaranteed. You and I hate to wait because we long for immediate and perfect satisfaction. You see, something deep within us is confident that there awaits us a perfect paradise where no longing will be left unmet. We inwardly sense that we are destined toward perfection and heavenly bliss. We strongly desire it right now. When it does not find us today, we experience a sense of loss – sometimes deep and penetrating and, other times, incidental and only a slight weight of discontent. <span class="bold-orange">What we must realize is that our inner longing for that which is perfect, upright, tranquil and righteous is a very, very good thing.</span> We are longing for God Himself and something within us is unable to be perfectly satisfied without Him. We are heading toward Him but not there yet and so we should expect to live out the remainder of our days with some level of unfulfilled desire. So we hunger again today for <em>the afterward</em>.</p>
<p>Yet we are still able to rejoice by faith. We can live confidently in peaceful expectation by faith. We can endure by faith. We can denounce the creeping sense of despair by faith. We retain our perspective, purpose and positivity by faith. We believe by faith, therefore we speak by faith. God hears us when we express our unfulfilled desires to Him in prayer and He empowers us to continue toward the afterward for another day in powerful and sufficient grace. We are learning to wait without losing our hunger for future glory. We believe and are made not to stagger at the promises of God. We continue and are strengthened to persevere because we are convinced of the inevitability of what is coming to us. We know that we will win even while we surrender temporary things that feel like loss. Yet <em>the afterward</em> is nearer today than yesterday. <span class="bold-orange">We are closer!</span> It is all coming to us, riding upon the unstoppable wave of God’s promise to us. Afterward is something we cannot miss as children of God. It has been given to us in covenant from the One who cannot lie. And when it arrives something even more glorious than <em>the afterward</em> is going to occur. What is it?</p>
<p><em>Forward.</em></p>

<p>May you be unable to ignore your personal need for <span style="text-decoration: underline;">His</span> affirmation alone and may you be victorious in the temptation to seek that affirmation in anything else; even good things like family, serving others or charitable good deeds.</p>
<p>May God smile greatly upon you so that anything you currently lack will be measured against all that you have been generously provided. May the result be overflowing gratitude in your heart as you recognize that you have it so much better than others in many areas of your life.</p>
<p>May Almighty God &#8211; the One who reigns over all &#8211; protect you from every lie of Satan, every powerful lure from this world system and from every leaning of your flesh toward the dangerous, unprofitable &amp; forbidden.</p>
<p>May God sovereignly increase your heart’s longings for Him and all that He has determined to be a part of your life.</p>
<p>May you see all of life’s currents as coming from the fount of Him who is deeply concerned with you and faithful in all that happens to you.</p>
<p>May you remember that His throne is still occupied – no matter what you see before your earthly eyes.</p>
<p>May you rise up today and be proactive in your faith. May you resolve to be aggressively good. May you be free from the paralysis of analysis and not complicate the pilgrimage you have been entrusted with. May simplicity rule your heart today.</p>
<p>May the Spirit of God empower you to seek the highest good of others today &#8211; this is the essence of love.</p>
<p>May you be unwilling to meet your own desires before you are confident that the needs of others you can assist have been met through you.</p>
<p>May you speak much less today than yesterday. When you do speak, may it be words of substance meant for the ears of the omniscient God of Heaven.</p>
<p>May you smile when you think of Jesus today as He smiles when He thinks of you, His beloved.</p>
<p>May you be so heavenly minded that you are able to employ a joyful, confident perspective those nearby you May you pass over the temporary so that your hands are free to take hold on the eternal.</p>
<p><span class="bold-orange">If you feel you cannot embrace these prayers for yourself, please offer them for me. I feel that I need each one of them in my life.</span></p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The stoutest of faiths will occasionally experience the deepest of shaking. Over and over again the Scripture magnifies the holiness of our Supreme God. He is the merciful and loving Father, The Almighty, unblemished in His nature, never-failing, inseparable from His holy love, compassionate yet just, lavish in grace, steadfast in patience, and perfect in all His purpose. We, on the other hand, are embarrassingly shown to be the opposite in Scripture: selfish, fearful, deceived and deceiving. We are unapologetically categorized as dead in sin, defiled in motive, disqualified in character and decrepit on our own. We are shallow and straying and sinful and soiled; unholy, unloving, unworthy, ungodly, unmoved and undone. <span class="bold-orange">What is one to think about this great gulf fixed between man and His God?</span></p>
<blockquote><p>“But Zion said, ‘The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.’ Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.” -Isaiah 49:14-15</p></blockquote>
<p>Though we are marred in our depravity, in a fixed moment in time, we were graciously awakened unto the glorious good news of the Person and purpose of Jesus Christ. We have been made alive in faith and have heard our own voices calling out upon this One named Jesus whom we have never seen. In that grand moment of our salvation we wanted nothing more in this world and counted life up to that point as a filthy garment fit for nothing but discarding. We wanted Him! It was not that we<em> found Him</em> for He was never the one who went astray! Yet, when He found us, it seemed to us that we had found Him because we become overwhelmingly aware that we had been looking in the wrong places for the very effects that He then gave to us in Himself. We had searched amiss only to be tracked by His astounding grace and to be caught by His loving rescue as He secured us in His eternal salvation. We have been redeemed. Hallelujah, what a Savior!</p>
<p>Yet, in all of our confidence that it is now well with our soul, are we not prone to regular shaking? Whether it is the pressure of this life, the up-and-down frailty of our responding commitment to Him, the unpredictability of circumstance, the aggression of our enemies or the awareness of our unworthiness…Christians are subject to bouts with doubts. It is in these moments that too much of our trust has been mistakenly transferred upon an object unworthy of its weight. Misplaced confidences ultimately betray us. Money will not sustain us, but we worry when the funds run low. Our physical bodies were born to die, allowing for our escape to Heaven one day, yet we cringe as it becomes increasingly clear that our earthly tabernacles will fold up someday. Our enemies should be under our Father’s foot yet they seem, at times, to even be aided by His hand as judgment of them is deferred while mistreatment finds us for yet another day. The preacher speaks to us of the good life, the blessed path, the anointed way and all of its Heavenly endowments…yet we sit in church with others who smile as we hope they do not notice that we are not experiencing what the man in the pulpit declares. Doubt accuses us of being a phony because we struggle to believe what God has said to us. We have wondered if others are immune to these soul-conflicts. Let me answer that question for you: none of us are immune from the challenge but many have overcome it.</p>
<p><span class="bold-orange">Doubts: </span> <em>Perhaps God has forgotten you. Perhaps He failed to clarify some undefined boundary you crossed. Worse yet, perhaps He has learned how weak and vacillating you are and chosen to move on to others who do not struggle as you do. Your theology tells you that He is your sole constant…but your current experience questions even that.</em></p>
<p>“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.”</p>
<p>Every mother knows the impossibility of resisting that inner urge to meet the need of her helpless, hungry baby. Simply put, it is deeply woven into her nature to meet that child’s need. It is not simply that she HAS TO…it is that she LONGS TO. Christian friend, God is not <em>incidentally</em> committed to you. He has powerfully obligated Himself to you according to His compassionate and loving paternity. He is your Shepherd, you are His lamb. He is your King, you are His citizen. God Almighty is your Father and, though your earthly father may have miserably failed you, God is not him and He wants you to remember that you are His child. Do not slight Him today by being suspicious of His goodness. Do not deny Him your praise by doubting His current plan. You can magnify Him in what you do know and what you have learned and what you choose to believe. You may trust Him tenaciously with all of the unknowns of your life today and sing a new song of Him in spite of the high hills around you which cast long shadows. You must defy your doubts by building an altar of certain praise. Despite the resistance, worship your Father and bow before His glistening throne as one who has been eternally won to His heart of grace.</p>
<p><em>Him…forget you?</em> Never.</p>
